During my legal project management training courses students often ask me to go into more detail about how to design and implement process improvement projects.  I am also often asked about how to best make a start automating processes.

Apart from there not being enough time to go into further detail during LPM courses, it should be recognised that actively doing legal process improvement is a discipline in its own right.

The IILPM has recognised this and has created the certification of Legal Process Improvement Professional (LPIP).

Legal Process Improvement Professional (LPIP) Certification

After completing my LPIP certification course you will have the skills and knowledge to:

  • understand and represent current legal processes using process mapping
  • analyse current processes
  • re-design current processes where required and / or create wholly new processes
  • drive and manage change initiatives to ensure all new and updated processes are implemented properly.

Course duration and outline

The LPIP course and certification has a minimum duration of 14 hours  / two days.

During the course we will cover:

  1. Introduction to Legal Process Improvement
  2. Make an Effective Start – How to run process improvement workshops which deliver immediate results
  3. Introduction to Legal Process Improvement Methods
  4. Planning Legal Process Improvement Projects
  5. Working with Stakeholders
  6. Process Mapping: why, when and how to use process maps of various kinds
  7. Solution Development: a structured approach
  8. Change: how to implement change successfully in legal service environments.

You can find out more about the course by clicking on the image above to download the course outline.

It is worth noting that during the course we will be broadly following the Six Sigma methodology, but this is not a Six Sigma course per se.  Put another way, we will be applying a structured approach to improving processes found in the legal service industry.

A structured approach to process mapping

With reference to a legal industry process improvement scenario, during the course we create process maps and charts (using Miro – see right) such as:

  • SIPOC Chart
  • Activity Sequence Chart
  • Swimlane Chart
  • Value Stream Map.

I also explain how best to run legal process improvement workshops, how to analyse the maps and charts and how to create improved processes as a result.

What you will gain by attending my IILPM certified Legal Process Improvement Professional (LPIP) Course

1. An understanding about how to apply process improvement techniques to all kinds of processes found in the legal services industry.

2. Improved leadership skills as you will be capable and confident of leading legal process improvement teams to help ensure successful outcomes.

3. Insights about how to automate processes and how to deal with legal software suppliers and legal system developers.

4. How to sustain process improvements and implement change successfully.

5. Certification as a Legal Process Improvement Professional (LPIP) administered by the International Institute of Legal Project Management (IILPM).

Course deliverables

  1. Written notes: covering all topics referred to during the course.
  2. Practical workshops: my public courses have practical workshops and exercises baked in.  Experience shows these really help students better understand key concepts and develop their legal process improvement skills.  I often find that in my public courses particularly, people learn almost as much from each other as they do from me – the course is a great opportunity to network, share experiences and learn about what other people are doing.
  3. Post course follow-up: few things are as frustrating as completing a course full of new ideas and enthusiasm, only to find when you return to work course notes get filed away as the daily demands of ‘business as usual’ take over again.  I am really keen that course graduates get to apply legal process improvement after training.  With this in mind I keep in touch with all course graduates.  I also offer course graduates three hours of free consultancy advice (via telephone or online). I find the people who take up this offer are usually those charged with implementing legal project management / legal process improvement in their organisation.  Some people continue the consultations, which become chargeable after the three hours.

An intensive course with workshops and exercises

My teaching style is informal, but please be aware that this is an intensive course.  I appreciate that it is quite a commitment for legal service professionals to take two days out of their business as usual activities to attend a training course.  So my commitment to you in return is a course which is comprehensive, engaging and at times challenging.

With this in mind, please be prepared to fully engage and participate in the workshops and exercises.

Students usually get a lot out of the workshops and exercises.  Everyone particularly enjoys the opportunity to work alongside a wide range of professionals engaged in legal service delivery.  My previous courses have been attended by solicitors, barristers, cost lawyers, in-house lawyers, government lawyers, professional support lawyers, business development professionals and project managers.
